A moment in time
"I live in a small house in the country near Dessau, with my dog and no one else. I remember that day perfectly. It was around five that morning that I had woken up and went about my daily ritual before work. I was sitting in my chair drinking my cofee and reading the newspaper when I became aware of an unidentifiable noise from the direction of the rising sun. Curious, I proceeded to my porch to see what was the matter. What I saw shook me to my core. The sky was on fire, not only because of the rising sun but because of the smoke and flame that arose there. As the noise grew, I could make out something dark on the horizon. As it grew nearer, the darkness spread across the sky like a plague of locusts. They were Soviet helicopters, moving forth relentlessly. Then, I both felt and heard the rumble as tanks rolled across the landscape. Temporarily tranfixed until now, this sight spurred me to action. I got into my car and drove like a madman, never once stopping until I reached some small town I didn't recognize far away from Dessau. Here I stopped my car by the side of the road, and wept for humanity."
