I've been wondering for these past years how or where to start rendering a UFO outright. But I also plan to model it via Blender (since I don't have 3DS max) any tips?

Start with Google and get a concept from it.

Regarding Blender, there is a very stupid way to start making a flying disk.

Here's what I did: First of all, you should start a new scene. Select the existing cube and delete it (in the left menu -> Tools -> Delete). At the same left menu, go to Create -> Cone. At the bottom right menu, click at the Object Edit and go to Transform. Set Scale into something like 1.0, 1.0 and 0.2. Set translation to (0, 0, 0.4). By now you should have half of the flying disk.

The other half is done in the left menu, with the cone selected, go to Tools -> Edit ->  Duplicate Linked. Select the new Cone in the right, and back to Object Edit -> Transform, make sure X rotation is 180d. Translate it to (0, 0, 0.2).

Finally, at the right menu, drag and drop the second cone to the first one, making it a sublevel of the first cone. Now select the second cone and go to the left menu -> Edit -> Join.

Now you have only one object that you can export as .3ds.

Leave the colors and details to Voxel Section Editor III, when you import the .3ds file that you've exported with Blender.
