Firaxis recently announced the upcoming release of Civilization: Beyond Earth, basically a spiritual successor to alpha centauri. Information released so far implies a great deal of involvement of orbital units and diverging non static techtrees.
Frankly it looks awesome, can't wait to play and go all lisan al gaib on a dessert planet and chosing harmony. Or going full mech by picking supremacy in any other case.
Between this and the release of Age of Wonders III, 2014 seems like a great year for TBS games. QUICK_EDIT
I don't know, from the screenshots it looks like a Spore-esque psychedelic mess of vivid colours and organic shapes. Completely different to what I'd expect from the Civilization series. Also, the background settings bothers me personally because it's another story where humanity doesn't learn from its mistakes on Earth and instead escapes to trash another paradise. When will they make a game where you have to work to solve the resource and environmental crises here and now? Be it through diplomacy and trade policy or novus ordo illuminati. That, if anything, should be challenging. _________________ QUICK_EDIT

Well as far as I can tell there will be several different styles of planets, a dune like style of planet was confirmed, it would have "siege worms" available for players that pick a harmony technology focus.
The planet seen on screenshots seems to be based on pandora from the Avatar movie.
Anyway you can always make a peaceful utopia in civilization games, it's somewhat harder in Civ5, in comparison to previous titles, since the AI acts like it knows it is in a game and they will all go against you if you're going to win.
I expect something similar to that in this game. The technology specialization thing (no tech trading, BTW) points to that. Learning from our mistakes would be optional, as it should be IMHO. You could always pick harmony if you want to live in peace with the planet. Alternatively pick Purity and burn the alien, or Supremacy and become a machine. QUICK_EDIT
