The American B-47 Stratojet is a medium sized and ranged bomber, and was designed to penetrate Soviet airspace at high subsonic speed. Its design helped lead to the development of jetliners of the '60s and '70s.
It served no combat service, but during its service in the Strategic Air Command, was always on "one third" alert: one third of all B-47s were put on standby, loaded with fuel and possibly nuclear weapons, in case of Soviet attack.
