I thought I'd play around with the Generals World Builder, so I decided to make a map for fun that won't have anything to do with fighting... More of, I'm just trying to create a map that is a town with parks and a business section... The map is still being worked on, and I got one park in it so far as I learn more of it...

There's the image of what I have done so far, I'm learning still, so it will take me a while. I know, I need to give it a lot more detail so no flaming me about it... All I want is tips that can help, that's all to help me learn mapping for Generals.

Don't place too many objects, or else the game won't like this map when trying to play on it. There is some kind of internal object limit...

If there's no skirmish, then what's the point? Really, people will peek on it once or twice at most.

This is RTS. We play them to CRUSH cities with our nukes and slaughter civilians with flamethrowers. Raaargh! Blood and guts!!!

Peaceful metropolies are for SimCity.

I said I'm only making this map to see what I can do... Not for skirmish... Mainly for art I guess. I'm surprised you guys didn't even think about making a map for art...

that's one thing of being a "designer" is aware of their target audience won't think like them. Some may appreciate well crafted level if their thinking on those terms. how visuals and map elements impact gameplay or experience.

With some triggers and stuff can be an interesting thing to play around with.Tell a story with what you got.

I would look at the map top down. the layout, as you are establishing shapes, looking at the contrast between textures, ie concrete versus grass, etc.

While if your going for a more "stylized" vs realistic. approach to your placement,

then the road placement with, organic vs. angular.

plaything with basic elements such as color and shape as you designer, rather than forcing realism, striving to make it "believable". instead.

I've made some updates to the map... I took out that rise and a good amount of one of the terrain tiles that won't go with the area for now... Anywho, I added to the map a park and a small market, none holding any people yet, just objects and trees as well as some new terrain not in the first picture.

looking good, some lighting make it more interesting.

another story type, is obscure characters, such as the technician, engineer or something. I sorta got a lil visual of Eddy the Engineer, going around with his talking construction vehicle friends, like Mary the MCV, (err i know its generals) Dozzy the Dozer. Going around making friends and helping people out. ^-^

Yeah... Don't use lots of fences, IIRC they lag the game more than other objects... odd...

that might be because they are transparent.

They made the cutscenes in generals, so maybe you can make a movie. "Give the worker Scale = 5" and you can have the attack of the giant man...

hey about this zombie thing, if you want ill upload some code me and beng were working on at cncmaps.com before it closed down (anyone know what happened to it). I primeraly wrote the code for the zombies while he helped me with other cool features of the map such as enabling the GLA APC with a correctly working scorpion rocket. Unfortunately, I wont have time (until perhaps may) to restart any serious work on my map. I've got tons of work from college that must come first so im willing to release parts of the code if you'd like.

Oh my god! Look, no more talk about my map being used for Zombies or anything else survival related! No monster madness (Anything about monsters really) or war things for this map! I'm only doing this for the Art, if I get triggering down correctly I can possibly make this a Shell map that goes around the city showing moving cars and such, once again, I'm ONLY doing this for the art, nothing else other then seeing what I am able to do. So please, no more talk about this map being used for survival or anything else!
