Subject description: Expansion vs Booster Pack vs New Campaign?
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

All C&C games so far had expansions. TD and RA1 had additional missions with Covert Operations and Counterstrike. RA1 also had new units (and more missions) with Aftermath. From Tiberian Sun to nowadays, we have expansion packs. Most of them brings new factions or new subfactions. All of them brings new campaigns and several new features, terrain types and new units as well.

The EALA guys has recently announced the possibility of creating Booster Packs for Red Alert 3, which, in Battlefield games, provided 3 additional maps and it costed 10 dollars at EA store.

If you had the power to decide how to expand Red Alert 3, which of them would you do?

1) Full Expansion Pack (new campaign, new units, features and perharps subfactions)
2) Mini Expansion Pack (new campaign and new units)
3) Booster Pack (new campaign)
4) Booster Pack (new maps and new units)
5) Other. Please, mention in a reply
6) No expansion at all.

The idea of having boosterpacks doesn't sound very great, especially if they only contain tiny bits of content such as maps... Confused

A big expansion is always the best bet, it makes selecting smething to buy so much easier, plus, from what I've seen in the last few years, especially with C&C games is that the expansion packs allow the developers to insert the content that was initially cut (Like the extra tiberium mutations in FS) from the main game due to budget problems, which definitely allows for a better experience, it kind of gives the devs some time to "goof off" and next to coming up with new, wild features gives us what the game was supposed to be. Smile

Also, things like booster packs haven't been a very great success since they are very piracy-prone (Look at The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion).

That's underselling them slightly.

For a fiver I think they're decent value (I have Northern Strike and Euro Force), the only real problems were that not many people seemed to bother with them so there weren't many servers for them (wouldn't affect RA3) and the fact you had to download them from EA.

EA Download Manager = No thanks.

New sides (or subfactions) is now a must for cnc xpacks. And to put those sides to good use, there must be a generals cchallenge style game mode. I think that (game mode) is one of the best features in the game. It has much replay value because you can play as any faction, and every level is fully teched. New maps is a given, and a new campaign would be nice.

I also think it would be interesting if they added trains and tracks to a couple maps, and let you capture the trains with engineers, and use the trains to transport units.

Ok, Daz. I actually searched into some EA sites about two random booster pack and they mainly mentioned the 3 new maps with a huge block of text about the game. I guess I was a way too quick on checking it. Anyway, I've fixed the poll.

NP, just keeping you honest #Tongue
The BF2 page had the bulleted lists for its boosters, but I had to get the BF2142 bit from Wikipedia as the EA page was a wall of text.

Full expansion. FS was not bad, though. YR is...well...for the logics and stuff.

personaly i would like to see a pack that expands the campain, adds a few more units and multiplayer maps

i can bet if EA relise a big expansion pack it will add 2-3 subfractions each just like zero hour and kanes wrath (id rather see 2 expansion rather than 1 **** expansion that adds lots of new things)

Some new special subfaction (experimental, joint task forces, Ants, Cows, Saudukars, etc.) would be better than only 20 new Campaign maps, or few new units and improved old (but it's also the biggest expansion).

Considering that CNC3 got lifted up quite a bit with KW, an RA3 expansion pack should rock since RA3 is better then CNC3

Fix RA, do a time machine retcon and turn it into a proper RA1 Sequel.

I dunno... if its just done automatically in a set pattern (Game release, then expansion and then game release) it becomes pointless... I'd rather they spent their time doing something they wanted to do because they love doing it (creating a better product) rather than just something for money.

how do you they actually want to do something? what if they just want to sleep?

I think variety is key to keeping a game alive and interesting, and adding more stuff to something means there are more possibilites in the gameplay of that something. The past three C&C expansion packs have been great (balance aside).

If they didnt do another game, that would be great! It means no chance of it being ruined. Which people seem to care about. Of course the fans are willing to run the series into the ground and then only complain even more.

Personally C&C3/KW should have concluded the storyline... I think that would have been pretty awesome.

Ha ha. I just hate the way the RA series has been taken, the woderful thing is it offers up its own means to fix it. It ain't gonna happen, but I can dream, can't I?

And I'm not bitching but the newer C&Cs have been mass-appeal games. Casual gaming. That one phrase will tell you what I think is wrong with it.
